77 percent of entrepreneurs wouldn’t return to ‘9 to 5’ jobs
A survey of about 300 British small business owners indicates that UK entrepreneurs don’t envy their old ‘9 to 5’ jobs, with 77 percent claiming they would never want to return to working for somebody else. The study, conducted by conducted by Continental Research in May 2007 on behalf of the bank Abbey, and released in September 2007, was conducted amongst a representative sample of Britain’s small business bosses and shows that entrepreneurs would not want to go back to working for somebody else, despite facing tough conditions.

According to the research entrepreneurs in the East Midlands are happiest, with 91 percent stating they would not want to return to their old jobs, while 51 percent of entrepreneurs in Wales would take up 9 to 5 jobs again. Construction workers proved the happiest entrepreneurs with 91 percent saying they would not return to their previous jobs, closely followed by those working in catering at 88 percent.
Ian Wilson, managing director of Abbey Business Banking, commented, “Running your own business can be tough but rewarding. Our research proves that the majority of entrepreneurs would not want to return to a 9 to 5 role working for somebody else. The benefits of running your own business obviously outweigh the negatives. Once people have taken the plunge they are unlikely to want to return to their old lifestyle no matter what problems they may encounter.”
He added, “Here at Abbey we recognise the challenges that entrepreneurs face and want to support them in their decision to go it alone.”
