Venturefest apprentice winner wins placement at Nominet
It seems that TV show ‘The Apprentice’ is the only way that youngsters are going to be encouraged to become entrepreneurs or learn something about ‘business’. The latest incarnation of it was a competition run by The Oxford Trust.
Its ‘Venturefest Apprentice’, is a competition for Year 12 students interested in science, technology and business [for our non-UK readers, year 12 is equivalent to 18-year olds during their last year at school or college]. The competition introduces students to business concepts, showing them how a business works, getting students to interact with real businesses and employees and developing key entrepreneurial skills.
After two days of gruelling challenges where students met and networked with people from up to 25 different companies, the judges selected Natalie Wylde, from Waddesdon School, as the winner.
Natalie said, “I was all set to do history at university, but now I really want to go into business. Venturefest Apprentice has been an invaluable experience from which I have learnt a lot including putting ideas into real business practice. Thank you to all those involved, it has been brilliant”.
Runner-up, Rachael Workman, admitted that at the start she had never done any public speaking but by the end her confidence had gone through the roof. As well as learning how to work as part of a team and individually, she said “overall the Venturefest Apprentice has given me the opportunity to expand my knowledge of the business environment”.
As well as £1000, the winner will spend two weeks in a placement at Nominet, an Oxford based company that runs the technology that registers all .uk domain names.
The Oxford Trust is a charitable organisation promoting the study, application and communication of science, technology and engineering. The Oxford Trust operates Science Oxford, a cultural centre for science in Oxfordshire. Science Oxford houses an exhibition area, an information centre, a series of public events and hands on science gallery for children.
