New department of energy and climate change – as predicted by The Chilli
As we had predicted in September 2007 (Goodbye DTI, game, set and DIUS), Ed Miliband, the new Secretary of State for energy and climate change, has announced the creation of a new department to tackle the twin challenges of energy security and climate change.

In The Chilli’s September 2007 article we had said the following:
"Good move, but not yet better. The responsibility for funding university and university research has been taken away from the old DTI, and given to DIUS. Why such an important component of the economy was the responsibility of the trade department still remains a complete misnomer – however, that is academic (no pun intended) as it is about to change now, thanks to a new regime in the UK. A new department of energy, based on the US model, could be the next such step under this new mantra.”
US style energy department
The energy department will be modelled on the US style energy department, which funds and allocates national energy research resources via federal labs like National Institute of Energy. Mr Miliband said, “I am looking forward to the responsibility of running the new Department of Energy and Climate Change and working with colleagues across government, including in particular Hilary Benn, who has led Britain’s work on climate change with skill and dedication.”
“The new department reflects the fact that energy policy and climate change are directly linked.”
“My job is to make sure our policy on climate change is fair for ordinary families and our policy on energy is sustainable for future generations.”
“We will do all we can to ensure affordable fuel bills for people, put Britain at the forefront of creating green jobs and play our part in ensuring every country meets the climate change challenge.”
“Climate change cannot be tackled by politicians on their own but through politicians and people working together.”
“I look forward to playing my part.”
