Quotient Diagnostics - Full Profile We first came across Quotient Diagnostics in late 2003, a start up company that has developed a more effective test for the monitoring of diabetes. The test in question, for “glycated haemoglobin”, gives clinicians insight into the long-term progress of the disease in a diagnosed patient, as opposed to the short-term picture provided by regular blood glucose testing. The test, known as A1c or HbA1c, has been around for a while, but requires sending samples to a distance laboratory. Quotient’s achievement has been to simplify the test, take it out of the centralized laboratory and make it work in the clinic or doctors surgery (i.e. at the Point of Care). In July 2009 a fifth round of funding attracted a cross border, €1 million from a group of European investors including French Succès Europe, an angel fund , based out of Sophia Antipolis, and Milan-Italy based IAG (Italian Angels for Growth), and a Swiss angel investor. An existing, strategic corporate investor (BBI Holdings) also participated in this round. The banking lobby, BBA , have tried their best to explain the current dilemma of lending to Small Businesses in a brief “Small Business Lending - How Banks Set The Price For Loans To Small Businesses" sets out the factors which govern the cost of credit, focusing on the three key drivers”. There were only 11 IPOs on the London AIM market, raising £ 598m, in 2009, compared to 38 IPOs in 2008, which raised, £917m. The 2009 number is highly skewed by a one big IPO, namely Max Property Group, that raised £220 million, when it floated in May. Although Silicon MEMs ( Micro-machined Microelectronics) microphone market double doubled between 2006 and 2008, it hit head wind in 2009s. The telecoms infrastructure market is poised to start growing again as the Chinese maintain their momentum, while Quidel Corporation (NASDAQ:QDEL), a leading provider of rapid point-of-care diagnostic tests, has signed a definitive agreement to acquire privately held Diagnostic Hybrids (DH), Inc. for approximately $130 million in cash. |
