We first came across Quotient Diagnostics in late 2003, a start up company that has developed a more effective test for the monitoring of diabetes. The test in question, for “glycated haemoglobin”, gives clinicians insight into the long-term progress of the disease in a diagnosed patient, as opposed to the short-term picture provided by regular blood glucose testing. The test, known as A1c or HbA1c, has been around for a while, but requires sending samples to a distance laboratory. Quotient’s achievement has been to simplify the test, take it out of the centralized laboratory and make it work in the clinic or doctors surgery (i.e. at the Point of Care).
Inside Contactless was started by Jacek Kowalski at the back end of 1994 when Gemplus, the company where he worked as the chip design manager, turned down the opportunity to develop their own contactless chip. Kowalski and three of his colleagues, set up Inside Contactless with a dream, and he recalls now that his passion and belief in contactless technology enthused enough of his friends and family to invest the equivalent of €160K without an adequate business plan or strategy to speak of. |
